Managing Eczema During the Summer Months

As summer shifts into autumn, individuals with eczema often face increased flare-ups due to changes in temperature, humidity, and environmental triggers. Preparing your skin for this seasonal change can help soothe irritation, prevent worsening symptoms, and maintain overall skin health.

Understanding Seasonal Eczema Flare-Ups

Eczema is characterized by red, inflamed skin, painful itching, blisters, and cracked or dry skin. The summer sun and heat can dry out the skin, while sweat, chlorine, and saltwater can exacerbate irritation. In early autumn, cooler, drier air further depletes moisture, making this a common time of year for eczema flare-ups. It is essential to implement focused seasonal eczema care that accounts for these seasonal changes, starting with protection in the summer to prepare your skin for the cooler months and prolong your autumn skin health.

Key Triggers for Eczema in Summer and Early Fall

Understanding common seasonal change triggers can help you prevent flare-ups. These may include:

  • Prolonged sun exposure
  • Irritants like sweat, chlorine, and saltwater
  • Humidity changes
  • Outdoor allergens

Knowing your triggers allows you to craft a skincare routine tailored for eczema prevention and treatment.

Daily Skincare Tips

1. Protect Skin from the Sun

Excess sun exposure can trigger eczema or worsen an existing flare-up, causing dehydration and painful skin cracking. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to effectively protect your skin against all types of UV rays. Wearing long sleeves and wide-brimmed hats and seeking shade between 10 am to 3 pm when the sun is hottest can also keep your skin protected.

2. Manage Sweat and Irritants

Sweating traps salts, dirt, and debris against the skin, which can cause irritation. After exercising and enjoying a day in the sun, we recommend taking a shower in lukewarm water and gently washing your skin. Throughout the day, you can also manage sweat by gently patting your skin with a soft cloth. If you have been swimming, rinse soon after since chlorine is another substance that can irritate the skin and cause an eczema flare-up.

3. Stay Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water is also key to preventing painful dry skin. This is especially important when spending time outside and sweating. While drinking water can hydrate the skin from the inside out, we also recommend an application of medical-grade moisturizer throughout the day to lock in moisture and strengthen the skin barrier. Thicker creams can be applied as temperatures cool into the dry autumn months.
